5 Ways to Detoxify Your Body

by Alex Hirsch (SU)

Detoxification cleanses the body of impurities. It removes toxic substances from the bloodstream and transforms them into less toxic material that is more easily excreted. When impurities are allowed to linger inside the body, they can rob us of physical energy; detoxing can help us reclaim that energy and better fight disease.

Our environment – including the food and drink we consume as well as the air we breathe – is full of toxins that are harmful to us. Stress can also be toxic. The adrenaline released when we’re under stress may aid performance – up to a point. In large amounts, stress hinders our health.

All of these toxins can lead to all kinds of symptoms, including fatigue, constipation, allergies, mental confusion, infections, puffy bags under the eyes, and much more. Detoxing the body involves eliminating these toxins from our bodies – and eliminating their sources from our lives to the extent possible.

How to Detox

When you decide to detoxify your body, begin slowly. Don’t go full throttle at first; start slowly.

Begin with the toxins you’re eating or drinking. For example, stop drinking alcohol and coffee and do not smoke. Refined sugars and saturated fats should be eliminated, too.

After reducing your intake of consumable toxins, begin the process of reducing the chemical-based products you use every day: shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, and household cleaners all fall within that category. Over time, these common household toxins can take a toll. Purging your home of them will encourage good health.

Here are five simple ways to make your detox process successful:

1.     Exercise is one of the most important ways to detoxify. Toxins are released through the skin via perspiration. Additionally, drinking more water during exercise increases elimination of waste through the kidneys, which filter toxins. Low-intensity aerobic exercise has proven to be useful for detoxification.

2.     Vitamin C is effective at helping the body to eliminate toxins. The vitamin encourages the body to produce a liver compound that is useful for expelling toxins. Drink orange juice as a natural detox. Adding ginger will aid in digestion, purifying blood as fat is reduced.

3.     Perspiration, as mentioned above, allows toxins to be excreted through the skin. Hydrotherapy is the use of water at varying temperatures to encourage detoxification. Hydrotherapy can be administered by taking a hot shower followed by a cold one. Taking a sauna bath is equally useful.

4.     Toxins exit through the body’s pores, so removing them can be as easy as dry-brushing the skin. There are special brushes made for this purpose.

5.     How you breathe can assist detoxification. Take deep breaths. Breathing in deeply allows the oxygen to circulate efficiently through the body. The body also relaxes as you take deep breaths. Rhythmic breathing is best. It aids the lymphatic system in the release and elimination of toxins.
