Staying Motivated In Your Weight Loss Journey

Staying Motivated In Your Weight Loss Journey

by Yenny (SU)

Losing weight can seem like a grueling and never-ending battle. Sometimes it seems impossible that your unwanted weight will ever go away and you just can’t help but lose hope. Although it doesn’t happen overnight, losing weight is not an impossible task and can be achieved with a little prep work and discipline.

The easiest part of your weight loss journey is to decide that you want to lose weight. The first few days in, you will spend time planning meals, exercise routines and your weight loss goals. This will be motivating and very exciting. However, once you embark on the journey, there will be many occasions when you lose your motivation and are willing to accept defeat. It is important to know how to deal with these slumps so you can continue on your weight loss journey. Below are some strategies you can use to stay motivated.

Be Realistic

Losing weight in a healthy way requires time and patience. It also requires realistic expectations from yourself. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 to 2 pounds is a healthy amount of weight to lose each week. Your weight loss objectives need to be realistic so that you work toward an achievable and healthy goal.  Having unrealistic expectations will lead to failure and will not motivate you to continue on your weight loss journey.

Set Short- and Long-Term Goals

Treat weight loss like any other goal you have in life. Plan out the long-term goals you want to achieve. Next, plan out short-term milestones that will serve as stepping stones to help you achieve your long-term goals. Focusing on achieving your short-term milestones will help you stay motivated because the finish line will be a lot closer.

Keep a Photo Journal and Weight/Measurement Log

Your weight loss journey is first and foremost a journey. Record that journey so that you can look back and see how far you’ve come. A photo log will help you document your progress and motivate you to continue on your journey. Weight loss pictures help visualize changes to your body that your scale may not be showing. Not only is a weight/measurement log a great way to keep track of your achievements, but it is also can motivate your to keep going. Record your meals, milestones, weight and measurements at regular intervals. This will be help you visualize your weight loss journey as you go along.

Focus on the Why

Weight loss can be challenging because it requires changes to your diet and lifestyle. It is just as important to focus on why you want to lose weight as it is to focus on your goal. When you feel unmotivated and think you will never achieve your goal, focus on why you want to lose the weight. Is it to fit into that wedding dress? To take pressure off your knees? To be able to keep up with your toddler? The why is what motivated you to start on this journey in the first place, and it will likely help you stay motivated when you begin to feel defeat set in. Remind yourself of that reason instead of focusing on how difficult your weight loss goal seems.

Expect Unexpected Setbacks

No matter how perfect your weight loss plan is, it will never go exactly as planned. Life will throw unexpected surprises your way. Maybe you will have weak moments when you want to throw the whole plan out the window. Perhaps you will do everything as planned to lose weight but at the end of the week you haven’t lost any weight at all. A journey is rarely a smooth ride. It is important you recognize you will fail sometimes, and it is perfectly okay to do so as long as you don’t let small setbacks prevent you from continuing on in your weight loss journey. Tell yourself that it is okay to have setbacks. If you don’t make your weekly weight loss goal, allow for readjustments in your weight loss plan. Maybe drink more water, cut out a few extra calories or commit to walking the stairs. Remember, it’s okay if you finish this journey later than you expected, as long as you leave it after accomplishing your goal.
