Tips for Starting Your Weight Loss Off Right

You’ve heard your doctor tell you that you need to lose weight. Trying on clothes can ruin your day. You want to be healthy and look good, so you’re ready to make lifestyle changes and shed some pounds.  Getting started may be the hardest part, so here are some tips to start your weight loss off right.

·       Drink water, and lots of it! Most people don’t drink enough water, and if you’re trying to lose weight, it is essential. The recommended daily intake of water is actually 6-8 8oz glasses of water per day. This may seem like a lot, but try replacing anything you drink that has calories with water. Being hydrated can give you more energy and improve your skin. Thirst can also be mistaken for hunger, making you eat more than you need. Also try infusing fruit into your water, for added flavor.

·       Pay attention to what you eat. What are you eating? What times of the day? If you wait too long to eat, your appetite can get out of control. Listen to your body, and be aware of what you’re putting into your mouth (even before you make a change). Planning for a meal can mean the difference between eating healthy, and grabbing the first thing you can find.

·       Count calories. Math and physics can shed some light on the apparent mystery of weight loss. The number of calories you put into your body must be lower than the number of calories your body uses for energy! It really is that simple. How many calories are you eating per day? This is your starting point. You are in control. While it may seem difficult at first, you will come to realize there are some high calorie foods that you can just avoid altogether.

·       Do better with food choices. Now that you know what you’re eating and how much, make some changes. It doesn’t have to be all at once; each choice you make affects your body and shapes how you will eat moving forward. Switch from regular pasta to whole wheat. Pick a time to stop eating at night that is attainable and stick to it. If you get hungry after that time, grab a glass of water instead. As you change the way you eat, it will get easier!

·       Move your body! Yes, you need to exercise. But there’s no need to go from zero to marathon. Go for a walk, or if you already walk, jog. If you belong to a gym, increase the time of your cardio or the resistance on a machine. Don’t give up!
